He argues that there is today all sorts of evidence pointing to the success of African Americans including the growth of a Black middle class and increasing Black access to higher education and political power. At the same time, he notes, there is a growing Black underclass, an expanding incarceration rate among Black males, and an ever growing population of economically distressed single parent families. It is a contradiction best seen in the rising prominence of Black Americans like Colin Powell and Condeleezza Rice while at the same time witnessing devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina on much of New Orleans’ Black population.
