First, it might be argued that by identifying the importance of the relationship between the organisation and its competitive environment (including its technological environment) a dynamic view of the technologyorganisation relationship is made possible. Here technological innovation and organisational change can be understood as a process of adaption to environmental conditions. Following from this, the commercial success and ultimate survival of the organisation rests on the capacity of management and others to respond appropriately to changing technological and other environmental circumstances.
These are based on a combination of related radical and incremental innovations accompanied by organisational innovations. Their effects are felt across several existing economic sectors and can result in the emergence of completely new sectors (Freeman and Perez 1988:46–7). Second, where such changes exert an influence on the behaviour of the economy as a whole then the effect can be ‘revolutionary’: Some changes in technology systems are so far-reaching in their effects that they have a major influence on the behaviour of the entire economy.
These technological imperatives bring about changes in the activities of organisations which are increasingly orientated towards the production of information-related goods or information services. These come to define and dominate economic activity as a whole. Related to these trends is the growth in the occupational structure of ‘information’ or ‘knowledge’ workers to outnumber ‘non-information’ workers (Kumar 1995:8–15). The overall effect is to question the conventional concepts of both ‘work’ and ‘organisation’.
