Large numbers of Spanish Jews converted to Christianity at this time, further undermining the vitality of their community and contributing to developments that ultimately brought its demise. Jews appear to have had a variety of reasons for abandoning their religion. Many converted in response to anti-Semitism, of course, seeking to avoid persecution and believing it to be the only path open to them.
